i encourage people to discuss why political video creators with the most support tend to skew white & male, even on the left. nothing to get defensive about, there. a few thoughts:
a good chunk of it is those societal biases in favour of white male voices that aren't checked at the door. acknowledging something doesn't make it disappear overnight, sadly, even among an audience that would like it to
it's obviously fine to have individual preferences for styles and approaches between creators, but we can't ignore that the sum of these individual preferences adds up to a bias
also important is the novelty factor. a minority takes a stand against bigotry? of course, it's in their interest, says the subconscious of a not-insignificant segment of the audience. but if someone from the majority says the same things, they're seen as impartial and unbiased
we get the novelty boost both coming and going, us cishet white dudes. from both the majority audience - who figure there must be something to issue X if someone 'impartial' is talking about it - and the minority audience, for whom the novelty is majority acceptance
this all is obviously annoying to creators who aren't white and male, as their work will be undervalued and undersupported. also annoying to me, as i'll always know a portion of any success i have was not down to the work i put in, but circumstances i didn't choose
we all want more diversity in our content creators, i'm going to assume. but we live under capitalism, unfortunately, and people can only do this right now if they're supported. demonstrating that that support is there is key to getting more people on board
there's not a whole lot i can do by myself, as just one person who also has to pay rent and things, but for now i've added this token effort to my patreon page
