As we watch thousands cruelly brutalized at the Mexican border, July 4 is a good day to remember that most Americans live here because of ancestors forced to come against their will or because they chose to flee poverty, danger or persecution...

....putting their children in grave danger as they crossed oceans, deserts, and wilderness, all of that without permission of the people who owned the land—all for an opportunity to build something better for their families, all believing it was what their God would bless.

...Yet now “patriots” say that anyone with the same aspirations, the same willingness to take those risks, the same faith that God wants them to be free, is a criminal and a cheat and an “invader” who deserves to die, nameless, in the desert.
