I'm a patriotic American now and I respect our national anthem & all, but it's really easy to see that it was originally a drinking song. It unfolds as every single drunken Russian monologue. It starts with a request to describe something the speaker is no longer able to see...
It continues with the speaker's valiant but slurring attempt to relay a very complex thought and having to pronounce long words very carefully, syllable by syllable, eventually losing the listener in the process but stubbornly getting to the end of the overlong sentence...
Then, suddenly, at a seemingly innocuous point in the narrative it becomes extremely forceful & poignant as the speaker breaks into fever pitch mid-sentence and begins shouting random nouns into the listener's face, finally repeating the initial query, but 100x more aggressively.
