Some info on the Darroch/Johnson business based on sources close to U.K. ambassador and Prez Trump. First, Johnson’s failure to back Darroch in ITV debate led him to conclude he had to resign.
He was already moving that way but this was the ‘last straw’. He was especially miffed because he’d done so much to arrange openings to Trump administration for Johnson when foreign secretary. Johnson had no lines into Trump himself.
Wednesday, Oval Office, Trump told by advisers that Darroch had said many good things about him. Trump concedes he’d been good ambassador. Decides he might row back on criticisms, offervolive branch. Then decides it’s too late because “Boris has already dumped him”.
