Great thread by @propublica.

I've been told to go back to where I came from so many times, I've never truly felt at home anywhere.

I've been policed like I didn't belong in my community. Schooled like I wasn't meant to have a bright future. Paid like I wasn't worth much.
@propublica There irony is I do want to go back to where I came from, Los Angeles. It's just gonna take me a little longer. But I know for my family, going back to where they came from is impossible.
@propublica The rural community in El Salvador where my mom grew up in, depopulated during the Civil War in the 1980s. U.S. trained death squads forced people to flee.
@propublica Today many of those lands still sit empty. I know, cause a few years back I took a hike to visit her birthplace. Patches of walls and some fencing is all that remains.
@propublica So while I can go back to where I was born (Los Angeles); migration, colonialism and imperialism make it so that "where I came from" is an impossible place to get to. That place does not exist.
