I hope @paulvans doesn’t mind if I share this photo he took. (I added a 2nd photo of him in the Lunar Arena.) It’s an unspeakable honor to have such amazing people as these for colleagues & friends. Last night at this dinner it struck me hard how priceless they are. /1

3/3...behind the camera is Dr. Paul van Susante (leading expert in space mining, off-Earth construction, and robotics). What reference could I ever have to value a dinner with these people who talk mind-blowing science, technology, and culture strategy as if it were ordinary?

Ultimately we opted to simply track them in real-time using multiple cameras and software to work out each vulture’s locations in 3D. The launch director had this “Bird Tracking System” that projected their trajectories along with a Go-Nogo launch decision updated continuously.
Also, we established the Roadkill Posse. It was tasked with cleaning up the roadkill at KSC to reduce the unnatural attraction of vultures. Some of my friends with PhD’s in science were put on the posse.🤦‍♂️ They were collecting dead alligators from dumpsters 🤷‍♂️, armadillos, etc🤦‍♂️
Watch this video of the Shuttle hitting a vulture on launch. If the vulture had been 3 feet to the right, it could’ve fallen onto the Orbiter wing’s leading edge causing “loss of vehicle, loss of crew”, a Crit 1 Failure.

A couple more fun facts about #Apollo11.

1. The famous boot print was a pre-planned science experiment. David Carrier recommended Buzz do it for a soil mechanics experiment. The vertical sidewalks and shiny flat surfaces proved the soil has high cohesion & lots of dust.
2. There actually is a crater in this picture under the engine nozzle, but it’s VERY shallow and it’s a ring, deepest ~1 meter away, less deep on the centerline. (In the lower right corner you see a 1 cm ridge stepping DOWNHILL away from the nozzle.) This was predicted. #Apollo11
3. The contact probe touched the surface when the Lunar Module footpads we’re still about 1 m up. Neil Armstrong was supposed to shut off the engine when it touched and freefall the last meter, but he chose not to. I can’t find the exact quote right now, but he said basically,...

OK, this made me tear up. About 9 years ago (April 2010), my plume research made me realize we have to get NASA to publish guidelines to protect the #Apollo sites. I invited John Guidi of NASA HQ to fly with me in reduced gravity and we chatted it up during the flight. /1
2/ Here's a picture of John (left) and me (right) in one of the reduced gravity flights that week. The plane was giving us lunar gravity and we were studying how jets of gas blow lunar soil in those conditions. After the flight we went to a taco place in Houston...
3/...and I said we should write voluntary guidelines because time was of the essence and there wasn't enough time to make actual laws or regulations to protect the sites, and we were facing problems & roadblocks in potentially going to the United Nations. John said "let's do it!"

2) I have ZERO patience for Christian hate. We spend a lot of time singing about love and giving. We provide for the local food pantry- giving food to families who fell thru the cracks & rely on others to feed them. We pray for those with cancer, we listen to the lonely. We love.
3) We are not a political party. Nor do we sit around condemning people. We spend our time pondering what God wants us to do, we pray for others, we physically actively help people. For being a Christian, I've been targeted by leftists who wanted to hurt me. Who hates? Fight back
