More folks are realizing that Twitter puts the Shouting Class in charge of society.

Good. Realization is the first step toward change.

The question is whether the problem can be fixed without China-style censorship.

Currently, the big networks (platforms) are experimenting with various mild forms of censorship, hoping to avoid the full version.

But perhaps there is a better way.
My instinct is that the best way to fix the problem of the Shouters is fragmentation and community moderation. Reddit holds the key.

Guardian columnist Jason Hickel has gotten huge attention for arguing that global poverty has risen in recent decades.

The problem is, Hickel is completely and totally wrong:

The idea that immigration is an invasion - part of a race war to replace whites with nonwhites - is incredibly common in rightist circles.
The idea that Democrats are importing immigrants in order to import votes - which the El Paso killer repeated in his manifesto - is pretty similar to fears of Irish immigration in the 1800s:
And the idea that (mostly Irish and German) Catholic immigrants were going to launch a surprise genocide of Protestants was surprisingly widespread even in the late 19th century!

THREAD: Six years ago, in July 2013, I was in #Kashmir. My stay there for work and travel purposes coincided with the onset of #AmarnathYatra due to which never ending convoy movement & overwhelming troop deployment on various Yatra (religious pilgrimage) routes. (1/n)
The Yatris comported themselves as militant Hindu nationalists, carrying the bhagwa & Indian flags. They aggressively shouted slogans like- Bharat me rehna hai, bam bam bhole kehna hai” (“If you want to live in India, you have to chant Shiva’s name”). (2/n)
They littered the place with garbage heaps, washed clothes and themselves openly. Recently, pictures of open defecation have gone viral on social media. Absolute disregard for cleanliness and the environment was palpable in their behavior. (3/n)

Big news on the US-#India relationship.
The GSP review for India, undertaken by the USTR last year, was primarily motivated by complaints by the US dairy and medical industries of market access. (On a higher-level, part of the Trump crusade against trade deficits.)

The Nazis then created a defamatory word "Lügenpresse" meaning 'Lying Press' with an aim to create distrust about Media. Slowly the Press was subjugated.

The newspaper 'Munich Post' was notable for its decade-long campaign against Adolf Hitler from 1923-1933. Munich Post was shut down by Hitler in March 1933.
How many Munich Post's are there in India now? How many had the guts the publish the CobraPost details?

The Munich Post lost and Germany came under Nazi rule — but in historical terms Munich Post won; bcse they were the only ones who had figured out just how sinister Hitler was.
