Yet another recent survey - this one from @pewresearch, just a few weeks ago - shows how climate change is the most politically polarised topic in the U.S. (short thread)
@pewresearch This is not new: surveys as far back as 2014, under Obama, showed that climate change was more politically polarizing than abortion and guns. Here's a sample from the exit polls in the 2014 election.
@pewresearch But a thermometer isn't red or blue, liberal or conservative, and certainly not democrat or republican. It doesn't give you a different answer depending on how you vote. The science is clear: climate is changing and humans really are responsible. See:
@pewresearch So how did it get so polarised? Not because anyone truly doubts 200-year-old science. But because many of those who hold the balance of power and wealth in this world believe the solutions pose an imminent threat to their bottom line. So what did they do? ...
@pewresearch They deliberately campaigned to sow doubt on science, attack + vilify scientists, and -- most importantly -- convince everyone that climate solutions are harmful, punative, and communist. If you want more info on how exactly they did this, read or watch amazon.com/Merchants-Doub…
@pewresearch So what can WE do about it? Well, new research by @mattgoldberg100, @Sander_vdLinden, @MaibachEd + @ecotone2 shows that talking about climate change with friends and family actually WORKS. pnas.org/content/116/30…
@pewresearch @MattGoldberg100 @Sander_vdLinden @MaibachEd @ecotone2 Not piling on the facts + data, but rather connecting on common values, talking about how climate change affects things we already care about, and emphasizing that yes, there ARE solutions that will make our lives better rather than worse.
@pewresearch @MattGoldberg100 @Sander_vdLinden @MaibachEd @ecotone2 And that's why, when someone says, "This is so depressing! What can I do about climate change?" this is what I say -> ted.com/talks/katharin…
