The “Israeli airstrikes in Iraq” story continues to rumble on without a single piece of substantial proof and it’s genuinely bewildering to me.

No footage, no physical debris of the bombs used found, no real investigative proof provided.

Just sensationalism and propaganda. [1]
Arbitrarily bombing other countries’ population centres has never been too nefarious, belligerent or reckless for the Israelis to exclude from their playbook & #Iraq’s air defences are depressingly weak but that simply can’t be enough evidence that these strikes took place. [2]
It hasn’t been missed that this story was initially heavily pushed in Iranian, then Arab and subsequently Israeli media before it made waves in #Iraq and the West.

Those 3 sides have a lot to gain from this narrative, while Iraq and the US are the ones left scrambling. [3]
‘Israel is bombing Iran-aligned forces in Iraq.’

Ensuing narratives:

Israel = “No limits to what is on the table. Ready to escalate.”

Iran = “Iraq can’t sit this war out. Joining the Resistance is the only option.”

Arabs = “This is what happens when you side with Iran.” [4]
The notion the US would green-light bombing raids on the Hashd in #Iraq is also diabolically stupid.

Anything is possible with Trump in office, but the Pentagon risking Hashd retaliation against the thousands of US troops housed in bases across Iraq is an almighty gamble. [5]
We’ve had conflicting reporting on this story for weeks, with “Middle Eastern intelligence officials” telling us it was #Israel and the Pentagon saying it could’ve been the summer heat.

Meanwhile, #Iraq’s gov’t has been forced into responding with empty political rhetoric. [6]
As things stand, there is no proof that any Israeli drone strikes even took place in #Iraq.

However, the Iranians/Arabs are happy to pin it on Tel Aviv and the Israelis are happy to silently take credit for the blasts. This is Middle East political manoeuvring at its finest. [7]
Ultimately, we can only wait and see how this episode will turn out, both in #Iraq & the neighbourhood.

Even if there were no Israeli strikes & this has just been the perfect storm in a teacup, if sensibilities are abandoned then the wider implications could be catastrophic. [8]
