It was in Jan 2008 that Uber founder Travis Kalanick and team spent weeks coding on #Varkala #Beach near #Trivandrum. (gadgetsnow.com/tech-news/Gues…)

Now with the advancement in internet connectivity and other facilities, beaches here continue to attract coders and #startup founders from all over the world as we can see foreigners glued on to laptop screens at the food joints near the beaches of Varkala & Kovalam.

Kalanick's story is now a prominent slide in some of the destination marketing decks for Trivandrum & has helped Trivandrum to attract romantic glances from some of the MNCs & global startups (Some of them are already here or are in the process of taking a final call).

We at Startup CCD (a grouping of startup founders who frequent CCD @ Kowdiar, Trivandrum) spent time working from Varkala Beach once in a while, and we enjoy the experiance. I suggest startups here should try doing the same as it will help rejuvenate yourself and the team.

There are many homestays availble in places like Puthenthope, Kappil, Perumathura and Varkala which can accommodate small teams.

I propose Kerala should include the concept of 'Coding on the Beach' into the IT & Startup policy, wherein all the required infrastructure like high speed internet connectivity, small meeting rooms and facilities to do video conferencing are provided in all the beaches ...

... and the location be marketed as a destination for startups worldwide to come and build their product's version 1.0. Also tech companies should be invited to do their internal team hackthons in such beaches. This will be a great boost to our tourism sector as well.
