Govt options?
- Some Brexiteers say PM cld refuse to give bill royal assent. (Parly sources say this ‘unthinkable’... *heard that before*)
- Govt lay bill for GE. Need simply majority (BJ minority govt of -41)

Good morning! Here is a wrap of local elections trends (caveat 1000s seats still to go)
* Brexit backlash for Tories & Labour. Tories heavy losses (-380 seats/11 councils). But v bad for Labour too. Votes not coming to them. Ominous
* Lib Dem & independents big winners 1/
Tories suffer Brexit backlash. Lost 15 councils/ -270 seats (15 councils)
* LDs taking seats off Tories lost in 2015 with gains in SW (Bath, NE Somerset, Taunton)
* Bad night but not total bloodbath
* Pain in Tory shires, PM to Wales/Scot to address activists there 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2/
V bad night for Lab, esp in pro-Brexit north. Net loss of seats & councils
*At this point in cycle you’d expect govt losses to go to main opposition. But party struggled; won Trafford but lost control of Wirral, Bolsover Hartlepool

The No 10 narrative will go like this: ‘Vote down Chequers and risk economic Armageddon’ (complete with some scary Treasury modelling on what a No-Deal looks like)
The whips will then use the prospect of economic Armageddon to press wobbling Brexiteers - and Labour MPs - to vote with May on Brexit

PM will soon address EU leaders at Brussels summit. She normally speaks for approx 15 mins. EU leaders can then ask her questions but they won't all sit and 'negotiate' together. After questions, Theresa May will leave the room so the 27 leaders can debate amongst themselves /1
EU leaders reject narrative that there's only 2 options now: Theresa May's deal or a no deal #Brexit . They will also debate option of a longer extension if the deal is rejected again by parliament next week /2
EU sees no 'ideal' solution here. They don't like idea of a long extension or rolling short extensions with permanent threat of a no deal #Brexit round the corner ("We've had enough drama" one EU diplomat told me) BUT leaders will want to avoid a no deal Brexit if they can /3

MPs can often be heard saying "my constituents didn't vote to be poorer" which is code for "I think people in my constituency were conned by a red bus but as a superior intellect I will save the poor wretches from their foolishness". Then they wonder why they're despised

As it happens people make choices all the time that are not in their immediate financial interests. Plenty people give up high paying jobs for less stress or for a better work/life balance. Plenty of wealthy lefties vote for socialists and say they're ok paying more tax.
Some people just have different priorities and different values. And that's allowed if you're a well to do leftie - but not if you're from Sunderland or Rotherham - as though plebs simply aren't capable of thinking in those terms and should be second guessed by their betters.

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
