Let’s be clear here, the education system is designed to reproduce racist outcomes. Therefore the system must be re-designed to produce anti-racist outcomes. Usually this means blowing it up and upsetting Those who historically have had power and privilege.
Of course there should be more funding in schools and, for all students, but if there truly is limited funding at least temporarily, it should go to under resourced communities. No excuses.
If it is truly a zero sum game, then some more needs to be coming to those who have had less.
When privileged families run from schools, that are predominately serving poor children, immigrant children, and brown children the marginalization not pay the cost.
When we promote students through grades, we’re not demonstrating grade level standards or basic skills, we are maintaining the status quo of an equity. Tracking does not solve this. It is still inequitable.
If schools are tracked, and tracks are predominately or even mostly comprised of specific races, that is clearly racist. The same for entire schools, regardless if we call them schools of choice, magnet schools, charter schools, etc.
Punitive and zero tolerance discipline policies do not work because oppressed and marginalized students have zero tolerance for oppression, especially when they use doublespeak to call it something else. The kids know.
This work starts in the mind, with a deep excavation of our racist beliefs and values, that were taught to us through the experience of racist policies and treatment. #HowToBeAnAntiracist
Those in power will hold onto it with a death grip. We will hear things like “choice” “options” “challenge”. But in between the lines is “maintaining my power and privilege” with a death grip. At the expense of those who ain’t never had power nor privilege. 🤔
Rich/white schools focus on academics and 21st leadership skills. Poor/brown schools focus on classroom management and behavior. We do this within schools with tracking too. Resources, staff, visions policies, and curriculum are aligned with these diff foci.
