Not a huge fan of current Labour leadership, but I see nothing irrational in their position.

Given UK voted, narrowly, to Leave, they see it as a duty to negotiate the least damaging way of facilitating that, put it back to the people, but argue Remain is still the best option.
I'm not saying this is the right position to land on or not, but it is entirely consistent in its internal logic.

It is only made to look silly by a very particular framing: "so you would campaign against your own deal?" Of course, this has become very popular with journalists.
It would help, of course, if Labour spokespeople could express it as clearly as I just did, rather than trying to avoid saying it.
