Agrivoltaics: combining solar and agriculture on same land can be win-win, especially in dry areas

Who came up with the first coherent plan to use renewables to cover all our energy needs?

My money is on Bent Sørensen, who wrote these two ground-breaking papers in the 1970s:

By "coherent" I mean that it covers all energy sectors (electricity, heating, transport, industry) and it's technically, economically and socially viable. In particular, it considers the short- and long-term balancing needed to deal with the variability of wind and solar.
The first paper looks at the big picture for Denmark: what are the feasible energy potentials?

Hydro and geothermal are limited, so it focuses instead on wind and solar.

His 1975 plan to use "continuous" (i.e. versus finite fossil) energy sources tackles the four major sectors:

Just choose your location (European countries at the mo, will extend worldwide shortly), which assets you want (wind/solar/batteries/power-to-gas), cost assumptions, then press the big red "Solve" button, wait 30 seconds and voila!
Fun things to do:

i) Remove long-term hydrogen gas storage and see system costs rise!

In most locations solar+wind+batteries alone won't be affordable. You need longer-term storage or other dispatchable low-carbon generation for multi-day lulls.

The #IPCC special report on the land sector is out.

It's the culmination of the hard work of 107 experts from 52 countries.

I've got some big takeaways. Buckle in – it's going to be a long thread.

Some quick background:

Land and ocean warm at different rates (thank you @RARohde) for the great figure.
Land is both a carbon source and sink. The balance between the strength of sources and sinks determines overall impact of land on GHG emissions. Humans already use a LOT of land (almost ¾ of all ice-free terrestrial surface, according to the IPCC graphic below).

It's 9am on a Sunday morning and time to update my #unpopularopinions on #solar thread from a year ago*. I've mellowed in some respects, so only some will be unpopular. I'm not gonna wait for likes in case nobody does.

1. #Solar wafer, cell or module manufacturing is a terrible business to be in, with vicious price competition and last mover advantage. Most well-known manufacturers are saddled with heavy debt they took on to build their rapidly-becoming-outdated factories.
2. Crystalline silicon technology is good enough. Another great module technology, either making a multiple junction cell with c-Si or replacing c-Si, would be nice and make money for the company that does it, but not fundamentally alter the dynamics of the industry.
