Heres the thing w/ NYT—& why so much “edgy” commentary in corp media in general is anti-Muslim, anti-feminist & transphobic: when your goal is to “stir controversy” but you cant offend wealthy subscribers/owners, the only place to punch is down; namely thru trolling liberal mores
Its why Maher & every edgy anti-PC type thinks theyre the first marine storming Normandy because they go after fat people or feminists because it’s the most courageous thing you can in a media environment where existential criticisms of capitalism or US empire get you auto-canned
The general formula is “edgy without being subversive”. NYT opinion columnists railing against BDS or dumping on “the pro-noun police” or mocking feminist scolds is how you do that. It offends liberal sensibilities (as it should) without really challenging anyone in power
