This presidency is why the Founders put it in the Constitution.
Many prioritize predictions about the political effects. I say prioritize the Constitution, and let the chips fall where they may.
Obama guessed Hillary would win, and held back on Russian interference, thinking he was defending electoral legitimacy.
Maybe acting based on guesses isn’t the best idea.
2/x
I’m not convinced that if Congress follows the Constitution and tries to hold the president accountable for abuses of power the American people will punish it with an electoral wave in the president’s favor.
3/x
Very safe prediction: Trump will claim exoneration. He will if Senate doesn’t convict. He will if House doesn’t impeach. He claimed it from Mueller report, which explicitly said otherwise.
4/x
That’s a prediction of people who are, as poker players put it, on tilt. People who assume 2016 was normal, rather than an outlier.
Not impossible, but hardly safe either.
5/x
But no one else does either. Many factors will decide the election.
Instead of acting based on unknowable guesses, how about just doing the right thing?
