So many of Trump's actions in office warrant impeachment. Ukraine's just the latest.
This presidency is why the Founders put it in the Constitution.
Many prioritize predictions about the political effects. I say prioritize the Constitution, and let the chips fall where they may.
Comey guessed Hillary would win and editorialized, thinking he was defending FBI legitimacy.
Obama guessed Hillary would win, and held back on Russian interference, thinking he was defending electoral legitimacy.
Maybe acting based on guesses isn’t the best idea.

I believe in America. Despite all this, I still do.
I’m not convinced that if Congress follows the Constitution and tries to hold the president accountable for abuses of power the American people will punish it with an electoral wave in the president’s favor.

Pretty safe prediction: at least 34 GOP Senators will defend Trump no matter what.
Very safe prediction: Trump will claim exoneration. He will if Senate doesn’t convict. He will if House doesn’t impeach. He claimed it from Mueller report, which explicitly said otherwise.

Not safe prediction: Impeachment will get Trump re-elected, and might cost Dems the House majority too.
That’s a prediction of people who are, as poker players put it, on tilt. People who assume 2016 was normal, rather than an outlier.
Not impossible, but hardly safe either.

I don’t know how impeaching for unconstitutional abuse of power—regarding Ukraine and many other things—will affect 2020.
But no one else does either. Many factors will decide the election.
Instead of acting based on unknowable guesses, how about just doing the right thing?
