THREAD: How Mississippi's members of congress, candidates, and other leaders are responding to the Trump #Impeachment inquiry.

Congressman @BennieGThompson says we "must protect our constitution and the United States of America's national security." 1/
jacksonfreepress.com/news/2019/sep/…
"(Trump) has abused his power, obstructed justice, & violated his oath of office. (He) should not put his political interests over our nat'l security. No one is above the law. Therefore, he must be impeached and subsequently removed from office." —Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) 2/
Mississippi Republicans have circled the wagons around Trump, ignoring concerns over his interactions with Ukraine's president. GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith simply called it "divisive" and "grasping at straws." 3/
Hyde-Smith's 2018 opponent and likely 2020 opponent, Democrat Mike Espy, endorses the impeachment inquiry. 4/
U.S. House Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS), who came to Congress in the 2010 Tea Party wave, called it "the lowest political attack" he'd seen, saying "I fully believe President Trump has nothing to hide," even though he has not yet seen the details of the whistleblower complaint. 5/
U.S. House Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS) also hasn't seen the complaint, but called accusations "unfounded" and said that he'd rather talk about "an infrastructure bill, immigration reform, and solutions to the opioid drug crisis.” 6/
Mississippi members of Congress who have not weighed in: Sen. Roger Wicker (R) and Rep. Trent Kelly.

Mississippi on impeachment:
House: 1 YES; 2 NO; 1 ?
Senate: 1 NO, 1 ?

Note: It's highly unlikely any of these 3 Republican ?s would support impeachment currently. 7/
