The UK Government has argued that tariffs should not be imposed at this point, but the US has taken the action as they are entitled under WTO rules. gov.uk/government/new…
It is worth recalling at this point that most countries are attempting to minimise the damage to their trade of dealing with President Trump. Only the UK are actively seeking a trade deal. Even such a trade deal will probably not protect us from such US actions.

Can we just squash this "EU should seriously think about accepting UK Brexit deal" nonsense? UK offer clearly breaches EU red lines, is opposed by most in Northern Ireland, and probably isn't technically feasible. ft.com/content/21c6c7…
Most importantly if you don't understand the sensitivity of Ireland accepting a UK request to put a land border on the island you probably shouldn't be commenting on the subject. Practically the whole of the republic feels about standing up to Brexit as Brexiteers do about the EU
Yes the EU rejecting the Johnson deal increases the chances of no-deal. And the EU has made it clear that is preferable to breaking their red lines. As have the UK - the Johnson deal does not cross UK red lines or EU ones. Again, then, why should it be the EU compromising?

@SamuelMarcLowe @UKTradeForum The biggest problem the UK Government will face on a US trade deal is that it is a political not economic decision, designed to undermine our ability to do an EU trade deal. It isn't a priority for most business groups in UK or US, particularly given TTIP experiences.

Widespread support maybe but a. pointless if not for an acceptable proposal to other side and b. support may still not be a majority, particularly if negotiations required even minor modifications
Government continues to treat negotiations as if some simple exercise of proposing something which will then be a deal, not a complex balancing of different interests of your own and the other side.

The UK proposal isn't close to achieving the balance.
Arguably the UK proposal shouldn't even have been tabled given the obviously limited support in Northern Ireland risking the future of the UK, but that doesn't to be fair seem to be a factor being prioritised in Brexit handling.
