The revised Protocol responds to the unique circumstances on the island of Ireland with the aim of protecting peace and stability.

All other elements of the Withdrawal Agreement remain unchanged in substance, as per the agreement reached on 14 November 2018.
WA brings legal certainty where UK's withdrawal from the EU created uncertainty: citizens' rights, the financial settlement, a transition period at least until the end of 2020, governance, Gibraltar and Cyprus and other separation issues.

Effectively -despite all the noise - the state of #Brexit negotiations has NOT really changed in last three days or so:
i) Much as there is huge political will in EU to get Brexit deal done.. /1
EU leaders do NOT want to be hurried into making a new deal to fit Boris Johnson’s timetable. Has to be something they can live with - that doesn’t cause potential probs for single market/ NIreland peace process in years to come /2
ii) This is very difficult to ‘fudge’! EU demanding not ‘good intentions’ as to how single market and peace process should be safeguarded on island of Ireland after Brexit but rather a ‘legally operative text’ /3

That means two borders: light touch customs border North-South and a full regulatory border East-West between Great Britain and NI. /3

So the wheels have hit tarmac on one of the key #brexit conundrums:
Everyone is working so hard to find a deal that avoids a hard border in Ireland.. but if they fail, and there is ‘no deal’, then by default, there is a hard border. The @EU_Commission finally spelt that out today
Here is what EU Commission Spokesman @MargSchinas said on the issue - 🎥
The spokesman is drawing the logical conclusion to the argument of those proposing that the #Brexit deal *must* include a ‘backstop’ to avoid a hard border: that if there if there is ‘no deal’, then a hard Irish border is unavoidable.
