Meesha Shafi may not be your ideal #metoo "personality", but then again no one is. No one deserves to be violated. Yet, no one should be ridiculed for what they have faced.
Next month, I am turning 33. Yet, I have had troubled times of my own. Almost 2 years ago, it suddenly hit me that I faced a few cases of child abuse. The first one came in 1992. I was only 6. A very religious relative of mine (a teenager) asked me touch him in certain parts.
As a child, I could not understand what was going on. I had no clue of why it happened. The "religious" relative now lives a cushy life in London where he aspires to be a cleric. A few friends have known about this and their response was naive and cruel.
When a man shares his story of abuse, his fellows reply: "Well, it never happened to us." Good for you! I hope it never does. Because when you realize you were violated, your sanity crashes. You don't understand yourself anymore.
In the end, there is great power in pursuing justice. #metoo is about that. It's not about silly celebrities egos. It's about getting your justice. In my case, there was none. I could not tell because I was a child and I did not know any better.
In my case, I forgave myself for not knowing any better. I had to let go of all the bitterness in the process. If you were a victim of abuse, reach out to a mental health specialist asap. It will help you to be better.
