U.S. official with knowledge of Syria ops it's true there is a plan to send tanks and soldiers to oil fields. Says it would be near Conoco gas plant, same basic site where hundreds of pro-Assad and Russian contractors were killed in February while moving on American position. 1/

I'm told initial force would likely be "about a company," i.e., a handful of tanks and a couple hundred soldiers. But source doesn't rule out that it couldn't grow from there. Describes it as a "complete change in macro approach" for the U.S. in Syria. 2/

All that said: This wasn't approved or a done deal as of last night. It was supposedly "a plan."

@JimLaPorta @ShaolinTom Addendum: Should be more clear. That massing of forces against the U.S. position near Conoco happened in February 2018.
