Apparently there was always a bit written in invisible ink reading "I don't really mean this. In the event I miss this deadline I'll just blame everyone but myself"
The obstacles to leaving the EU on October 31 were well known in June. Johnson made the promise anyway. It was then one failure after another as he tried to meet a promise he never should have made, culminating in accepting a deal he previously rejected.
Like so many supposedly 'strong' leaders Johnson appears to be a liability in international negotiations (sorry, said a US think-tanker when I suggested Johnson was taking negotiating lessons from Trump).

Though the alternatives scarcely inspire confidence...

A proposed US trade deal always had everything you needed to be a political gift to Labour - unpopular US President, association with deregulation, concerns about the NHS and food safety, choosing US over EU in terms of future relationship
Lesson from TTIP - facts largely unimportant when it comes to a trade deal with the US. Sentiment all important. And a failure to be transparent makes that sentiment 10 times worse.

Perhaps another lesson - sometimes it is worth listening to critics.

A good hook for wondering whether an election based on misleading statements about the UK's place in the world and what happens next in Brexit will really turn out to be so cathartic or politically consequential...
On the Conservative side, Get Brexit Done = sign the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement then move less than seamlessly into a long negotiation on the future relationship while also trying to hold together the union, and discovering trade deals are limited and politically sensitive
On the non-Conservative side, have a referendum, which will be the platform for another divisive contest and which, dare one say, could be won again by leave, on which at least the Labour platform of making that by deal rather than no-deal makes some sense

I'm not as familiar with Parliament's rules as others, but I'd have thought who could vote in an election was relevant to a bill to hold an election. And the fact amendments might pass the reason why governments don't normally want to call an election in this way.
This is surely not going to turn into one of those sagas which leaves the whole of Parliament, but most of all this PM, looking silly?
All of which doesn't mean I support or oppose votes at 16 or EU citizens voting. Don't have a strong opinion. But if you're going to have a bill for an election these are things that should be discussed, rather than everyone charging in a hurry in whatever direction the whips set

Excellent threat as ever by the former chief lawyer of the #EU Council. I'd add a couple of things below:
What is underestimated both by Remainers and on the continent: the importance of Brexit actually happening. At this stage a no-deal would trigger that irreversible event. So even as coming back to the table (maybe days or weeks after) wld be painful, the deed will have been done
Achieving that irreversible Brexit is hugely important for Brexiters, and the accompanying costs would be seen as acceptable (by them) as a way out of the present stalemate.
