Part of Deval Patrick's conceit for running is supposedly that he can pick off a large share of the "black vote," but there are multiple black candidates already in the race and black voters have thus far expressed a preference for white candidates. Seems pretty condescending
Also, Patrick's ascendance in Massachusetts politics was based on winning over educated whites. MA does not have an especially large black population. At least Booker was the mayor of a predominantly black city
It's strange that many in the media, and apparently in the donor class, haven't re-thought their assumptions about identity dynamics given how the primary has transpired thus far
