in the interest of constantly pioneering new realms of twitter posting i will now attempt to save a large american corporation millions of dollars. this one is not evil and employs a lot of people so i feel like its cool.
hey @kroger, my friend works at one of your stores and i came by to visit him as he was closing. we got to talking as i was buying some stuff and noticed an inefficiency in your machines that weigh meat at the deli counter and possibly in other parts of the store.
when the person behind the counter cuts the meat, lets say it ends up being 2.10 pounds, they put it on the scale. the scale then requires them to put in a tare weight, i.e a weight to subtract from the weight its currently measuring.
the thing is, the machines wont accept a tear weight of 0, so the employees just put in “.01”. but the meat is just sitting on a piece of tissue paper that is so light that it alone doesnt register any weight on the scale. so they are subtracting .01 pounds from the actual weight
so this results in dropping the price of the meat being purchased somewhere between five and ten cents depending on the price of the meat every time a transaction is done at the deli. he said this is the only way to get around the machine not accepting a 0 tare input.
ive been to other krogers and have kind of noticed this before but didnt really put it together until i spoke with him. heres where the math comes in. if at one kroger there are 50 things purchased over the course of a day (underestimating) thats about 5 dollars at least.
kroger has well over 2000 stores so lets say this only happening at half of them, probably underestimating, thats 5000 dollars a day, which adds up to 1.8 million dollars a year. its probably more than that because most people get more than one item from the deli at a time.
fixing this small error (that the machines wont accept a tare weight of zero) would also not pass any cost onto anyone as customers already get an approximate weight anyway, so the price already varies slightly for them whenever they buy anything.
my friend wanted to remain anonymous and he knows i like posting weird stuff online. he said you were a good company to work for and i found this all exceedingly weird which is kind of my thing so, here we are. this is almost definitely costing you over 2 million dollars a year.
whatchu think @kroger can you tell someone important about this and they or you can take all the credit for our brilliant on the ground fieldwork. i will accept one million dollars worth of coupons for this. i also hear u guys have rare pink hats, i would accept that also
