Prior to the war, author was a racist expat in Africa with black gf in a shady mineral extraction business. His loyalties are racial over national. Donbass war to him was a popular uprising against a tyrannical government.
Author meets his first volunteers at a house near the border. A lot of locals on both sides are sympathetic to the rebels, but Russian border patrol has some deeply hostile agents. Volunteers do the arms/soldier smuggling without government help.
most volunteers he’s met so far are cossacks or from the Volga republics. One volunteer, a Komi, is likely a member of Salo Forum. He discusses phrenology, physiognomy, & Ottoman explorers with the author.
In June 2014, Lugansk had a garrison of at most 400 part time militiamen with no heavy weapons. Despite this, 🇺🇦 troops didn’t take it, being in such disorder that parents were showing up to the front lines & taking their sons back home.
From his description, Batman’s unit was the only functioning force in Lugansk city at the time. Neither side had much organization.
Author fights his first battle, rebel militia against Ukrainian mechanized troops. The IFV is a huge target the separatists are able to destroy with an RPG. Some militiamen were fighting the guys from their old Ukrainian military unit.
The author’s stay in a hospital after being WIA. Most of the volunteers are locals, & the women were appreciative. Some men were more interested in videogames than the approaching war.
Author’s take on garrisoning civilian populated areas - rebels could defend cities much more easily than the steppe.
Author’s bitterness at Putin for not occupying eastern Ukraine after the collapse of the government.
Author returns to service, this time in Donetsk garrison. Normal police work, but also enforces DPR morality legislation. Garrison also has to battle Ukrainian partisans - snipers, raiders, & nomadic mortarmen.
As a low level government official, the author has to regulate the traders of Donetsk. Most Caucasian traders fled, but the Vietnamese remain, insisting on their loyalty to New Russia.
Author encounters two more militiamen. First is a part-Ossetian nihilist bodybuilder conspiracy theorist engineer who is obsessed with healthy eating. Second is a handsome MMA teacher & bodyguard from Yekaterinburg.
Most of the rightists are at the front, so government is left in hands of leftists. Author still likes them, but thinks they are wrongheaded. Difficulty in rebuilding the bureaucracy due to most bureaucrats fleeing.
🇺🇦 is trying to cut Donetsk supply lines & surround the city. Many rebel troops are sent to defend Ilovaysk. 🇷🇺 starts to send a large amount of supplies & “volunteers”
Like a lot of us in 2014, the author thought Islamism was the wave of future. His thoughts on that & how Whites need our own equivalent.
After the truce, Moscow forces the rebels to accept their picked leaders, who the author loathes. One of the author’s friends is arrested by the Moscow appointees, but his gf is able to get him freed.
Author’s view on the importance of the importance of Russian volunteers to the rebel cause. Only countries with the will to fight & struggle survive, & they proved it.
A fun read in the same sense that Junger’s “Storm of Steel” was fun. Wars bring together people from all walks of live, including the strange types that thrive in struggle. Results are usually pretty funny, even if often tragic. Strongly recommend this book.
