Only been back home in West Belfast a couple of days but 2 striking things already

1) here in one of the poorest places in Western Europe, I've heard more realism about/insight into Brexit than from every single member of the UK cabinet put together. Amazing what money can't buy
2) people here delight in what so many Leavers fail to grasp: they have the EU of 27 states & nearly half a billion people on their side. As one of the largest non-migrant populations of EU citizens living in a 3rd country that gives pride & strength. Despite Johnson's awful deal
And they know here how awful Johnson's deal will be for Norn Iron

So on 1 hand: solidarity with fellow remainers in England (Scotland & Wales - it's taken for granted)

But on 2 hand: seething resentment against Little Englanders - wilfully & cruelly risking others' jobs & lives

Is the penny finally dropping? That High Priests of Brexit are not only deliberately driving us to a no-deal in January 2021. But also pressing ahead with plans to take away basic rights of own citizens under cover of weirdo claims about "sovereignty" straight out of 19th century
And that - for all their bullshit bluster, delusional dreams and annoying alliteration - Johnson & Co in fact possess about as much insight into and understanding of the realities underpinning international trade as a juvenile below-average-wit-and-intelligence gnat
When it does... Sensible politicians have to win back a proportion of population who voted Johnson in 2019. But as for me: if you voted Tory, you knowingly voted to damage the lives of my family and friends, as well as millions more. So I sincerely hope you get what you deserve.

A short thread with my initial “compare and contrast” between EU and UK negotiating mandates: 10 points to follow...
1) EU position = no great surprises: largely follows old guidelines + Political Declaration. But clear that Johnson Gov does not regard itself even as morally bound to respect terms of own withdrawal package: now proposes extreme Brexit with very distant model of EU-UK relations
2) UK position is not only significant departure from its own revised Political Declaration but now also stands light years away from new EU mandate. Lots of examples: what to do with audiovisual services, geographical origins, Gibraltar etc. But here are my "key issues":

Publication of UK negotiating objectives, breaking from its very own word just a few months ago, should tell EU and rest of world one thing: this Government is utterly untrustworthy. I would add - the UK people, but they know it already - and 44% still voted for Jonhson anyway...
Said it before but worth repeating: realpolitik might let Trump lead US like a rogue state. But same realpolitik will punish UK as Johnson tries to mimic his Master. Brexit has already damaged UK standing & influence. Neo-Tories' imperial delusions about sovereignty make it worse
And let's not even mention the automata that pass for MPs - you know, the ones who voted through Johnson's withdrawal package, including the bit that denied parliament any real say over what comes next. "Taking back control". Oi, Tory voters, let me sell you some magic beans...

Much on free ports /zones over the last couple of days. The only thing you really need to know about them is that they have absolutely nothing to do with the most pressing #Brexit challenges
These remained unchanged since well before March –NI border, customs procedures, delays, business readiness etc. Free zones/ports change very little here.
The issue of whether or not EU membership has prevented us from having free ports/tax free zones is completely irrelevant (also- it hasn’t).

One of the bizarre notions of #Brexit voters is that paying x billion into EU to run the common market gives EU consumers a duty to buy British products rather than an opportunity to market UK exports.
This British delusion about how trade works is illustrated by Brexit voting idiots saying stuff like “we pay 40m for a trade deficit of 150m”. They confuse foreign trade with buying things abroad. Producing and marketing stuff that foreign consumers actually want is beyond them.
The same delusion is at work when British politicians mention “the ability to strike our own trade deals”. Leavers think that somehow all that is required is a Doctor’s note from a disgraced Defense Secretary and instantly trade starts flowing to those foreign far flung countries

I talked to business lobby groups, Stephen Kelly from @ManufacturingNI fresh back from talks with Barnier. And bosses of big companies.

- all-UK in a temporary customs Union
- Northern Ireland only in Single Market for goods, via devolution
- no checks GB-NI
