1. It’s pointless commemorating a contract between 2 political parties. A thoughtful leader would have changed the narrative & declared a Memorial Day for the thousands of innocents killed during Gukurahundi. There are still Gukurahundi denialists. Some media clips from the time:
2. “June 10 Silongwe Kraal line, Tsholotsho district - 22 people including women and children herded into a hut and burnt to death” #GukurahundiMemorial
3. “People in Matebeleland ... claim the soldiers killed, tortured and raped hundreds of civilians and razed whole villages in the province early this year in a crackdown on dissidents”
4. It wasn’t just guns, torture and rape by the 5th Brigade. Food was also weaponised. A severe drought warranted food aid. There was a curfew in the Gukurahundi affected areas. As this story shows relatives who tried to send food to remote areas had supplies confiscated.
5. Rural communities took the full force of the atrocities - the few dissidents on the one hand and the disproportionate force used by the state. Caught between a rock & a hard place, many fled for safety. There was a refugee camp in Botswana #Gukurahundi
6. The world was aware of what was going on.
7. It’s unacceptable that to this day there are still Gukurahundi denialists among us. The information is out there. The perpetrators also have to opportunity to accept the wrongfulness of their actions. Survivors & victims deserve justice, respect & compensation.
