Settling in for what looks like a great History of Capitalism panel at #AHA20.
Amy Edwards is offering a fascinating look at the role the UK media played in the spread of Thatcher’s “popular capitalism” — Page Three girls promoting stocks, a dumbed down “Money Page” to build up investors, BBC programs like Money Spinner, etc. #AHA20
Edwards talks about the spread of financial game shows and board games — including this one from Andrew Lloyd Webber! #AHA20
David Huyssen offering a reconsideration of the framework of financialization with a look at the first hedge fund, created by Alfred Winslow Jones — a socialist. #AHA20
Now @dygottlieb on the Wall Street recruitment boom of the late 1970s and the dramatic impact it had on NYC as a whole. #AHA20

If you haven’t read his @JournAmHist article, check it out: academic.oup.com/jah/article-ab…
As @dygottlieb notes, Wall Street recruiters prioritized hiring Ivy League grads in the Humanities because what they sought more than anything were pedigreed storytellers who could persuade investors.
And @dygottlieb closes with a brief look at his JAH article, noting how the surge in Wall Street sparked a wave of arsons in Hoboken as landlords burned out Puerto Rican residents to make room for yuppies.

“Almost everywhere the FIRE sector boomed, real fires followed.” #AHA20
Terrific comments by @RobertWosnitzer — who notes his own journey into and out of Wall Street as a trader at Lehman — weaving the three papers together. #AHA20
Fantastic panel all around!

(And tagging @davidhuyssen in here late as I just found his handle)
