Opinion: Destroying cultural heritage sites is a war crime - Los Angeles Times

USA has nominated 25, Iran, - one sixth of the size of the USA has nominated 56, Iran being recognised as a cradle of civilisation.

The Hague Convention does not stop there.

latimes.com/opinion/story/…
A part of the Hague Convention of 1907, signed over a century ago, says that “all necessary steps must be taken” to spare “buildings dedicated to religion, art, science, or charitable purposes, historic monuments, hospitals, and places where the sick and wounded are collected.”
Similarly, the Geneva Convention Protocol I, signed in 1949 and amended in 1977, renders unlawful “any acts of hostility directed against the historic monuments, works of art or places of worship which constitute the cultural or spiritual heritage of peoples.”
Federal law in the US says that violating these international conventions would constitute a war crime. Anyone who violates them could be imprisoned or, if death results from their actions, be sentenced to death.
Members of the Trump administration should be on notice that they can be held liable under these provisions.

The USA entered a negative vote initially re the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, then signed it but did not ratify it, so cannot be tried in The Hague.
Sites like the Shustar hydraulic system, initiated in the C5th B.C. & hailed by UNESCO as a “masterpiece of creative genius.” Also included as a group are 8 Persian gardens whose distinct design influenced the Alhambra in Spain & Taj Mahal in India & countless modern landscapes.
Sorry! Wrong attachment above. Still. Understanding something of the Rome Statute is useful, but that is one of many applying to the International Law relating to war.

Nominating World Heritage sites does not necessarily mean that status is conferred.
And Iran has so many historic sites. Wilfully destroying a country’s heritage is also destroying part of a county’s embedded identity and truth.

And Trump’s boorish rhetoric designed to put pressure on the Iranian people to topple their regime is like to backfire.
But, in any event, in destroying mosques and museums and hospitals you also, almost certainly destroy people.
