Trump authorized Soleimani's killing 7 months ago, with conditions

The timing raises new questions about the Trump administration's stated justification for taking out the top Iranian general. nbcnews.com/politics/natio…
After Iran shot down a U.S. drone in June, John Bolton signed off on an operation to kill Soleimani, officials said. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also wanted Trump to authorize the assassination.

Pompeo urged the president to consider taking a more aggressive approach to Soleimani after showing him new intelligence on what a second senior administration official described as "very serious threats that didn't come to fruition."

New details about Soleimani killing further undercut Trump’s lies

Seven Days in January: How Trump Pushed U.S. and Iran to the Brink of War
The story of that week, and the secret planning in the months preceding it, ranks as the most perilous chapter so far in President Trump’s three years in office.

Officials also confided to the Times that the intelligence did not convincingly support the claim of an “imminent” threat. This has been confirmed by at least one Republican senator briefed on the intelligence, along with many Democrats.

📌So the hyper-hawkish duo of Pompeo and Bolton (who has craved war with Iran since he wore short pants) got Trump to authorize the killing of Soleimani months ago, under certain conditions.

When the American contractor was killed, the elimination of Soleimani was on the menu of options presented to Trump. So was the elimination of Abdul Reza Shahlai, an Iranian commander in Yemen, but when that went awry, it was not disclosed.

After the contractor was killed, the US ordered strikes that killed two dozen Iran-backed militia members, which led to protesters storming the embassy in Baghdad.

That’s apparently when Trump, his brain addled by Benghazi-itis — a desire to look tougher than former PBO did during the Benghazi attacks — ordered the killing of Soleimani, & Shahlai, even though the intel indicated that Iran didn’t intend to escalate.
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
Soleimani was originally on Trump’s target list in keeping with a Bolton and Pompeo agenda wanted for months.

& Trump seems to have ordered a broader op against Iranian military leaders than anybody knew & not in response to a genuinely “imminent” threat.
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
This is nothing like the story we’ve been told. Which raises serious questions about the legality of the killing:
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
“An imminent threat is what you would need to justify taking an action in self-defense,”

“The threat must be so extreme & imminent that it would be unreasonable to seek the necessary approvals before taking action to defend the country.”
