Today @ScienceBrief publishes its first Rapid Response Review on #wildfire risks

sciencebrief.org/briefs/rrr-hea…

**All** 57 scientific papers show linkages between #climatechange and increased #fireweather

#FireWeather refers to periods when fire is more likely due to hot, dry, and often windy conditions

Fire weather is an overall measure of the flammability of the landscape - increases suggest rising fire risk
Observations show that fire weather seasons have lengthened across ~25% of the Earth’s vegetated surface, resulting in a ~20% increase in the length of the fire weather season on average globally

Models suggest the impact of #climatechange on fire weather emerged above natural variability in 22% of global burnable land

agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…

In 1990s for Amazonia & Mediterranean
In 2000s for Scandinavia
In 2010s for Western USA & Canada
#climatechange also affects #fireweather in many other regions (Siberia, Australia), although formal detection does not yet emerge from natural variability (not accounting fires this season yet, many groups working on it)

Paleo records also support increased wildfires during warmer periods. For instance biomass burning has increased with rising temperature over the past 1500 years

Fire weather only translates into fire activity if ignitions occur

Globally, land management has led to a *reduction* in burned area. However, human activities have *increased* burned area in the world’s dense forests

Future #wildfire risks grow with each added degree. To minimise growth in fire risk we must in fire risk we must stabilise the world’s climate with #netzero emissions and limit temperature increase to well below 2°C, or 1.5°C.
