Happening now: students parroting the message of ex-Chrétien chief of staff Eddie Goldenberg await Meng Wanzhou’s arrival at the Law Courts. Are they paid to be here? #cdnpoli #bcpoli #humanrights

Meng Wanzhou seated in plexiglas prisoner’s dock in room 20, wearing a black dress w/ white polka dots, flipping through stapled documents beside her translator. Room 20 is the most-secure in the Law Courts, built for the Air India trial and also hosted Canucks ownership battle.
Same location where Huawei’s public relations contractor sent an executive and hired photographer on Friday.
Assoc. Chief Justice Heather Holmes arrives and the Meng Wanzhou extradition hearing hearing begins. #cdnpoli #uspoli
Within 10 minutes, the judge says, TV monitors to be set up in the hallway for those not able to get into the full 149-seat gallery in room 20. She denied an earlier request by media outlets to broadcast/webcast the hearings.
The official request for Meng Wanzhou’s extradition, dated Feb. 28, 2019, is submitted by the Crown lawyer as an exhibit.
Exhibits being submitted by John Gibb Carsley are unredacted, and won’t be made public.
Meng’s chief lawyer Richard Peck takes over and begins contesting of the extradition application on the basis of “double criminality.” Peck: “Fraud [charge] is a facade, the essence of conduct is breach of sanctions, not fraud.” If he can prove that, then Meng is freed. #cdnpoli
(When it’s his time to reply, Crown lawyer John Gibb-Carsley, on behalf of U.S., will argue this is a fraud case and only a fraud case, and that Canada and U.S. have similar fraud laws. If he proves that, the extradition case continues and Meng is not freed.) #cdnpoli #uspoli
Peck: “This extradition has every appearance of the U.S. seeking to enlist Canada to enforce the very sanctions which we have repudiated.”
Meng defence hanging its hat on the issue of sanctions. U.S. case, expressed by Canada’s A-G, is all about fraud charges against Meng.
Peck: “Sanctions are a species of law unlike the general law.” Designed for various purposes to regulate relations with another state.
U.S. alleges Meng defrauded HSBC, to get around U.S. sanctions.
Court breaks for morning recess.
Court back in session, as Meng lawyer Eric Gottardi continues with the double criminality application.

#DYK Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou is accused by the U.S. of defrauding HSBC. The same bank that holds the mortgage on her two Vancouver homes, which are registered in the name of her husband. #vanpoli #bcpoli #cdnpoli #ufwd #vanRE #uspoli thebreaker.news/news/bail-meng…
Afternoon break over as court reconvenes. Meng Wanzhou was seated in the hallway, smiling and holding her mobile phone, talking to a PRC consul official. Couldn’t tell if it was a Huawei or Apple model, because of the pink protector.
Meng lawyer Eric Gottardi tells the court that Canadian fraud law requires an “actual loss or risk of deprivation,” elements that he says are not in the U.S. fraud law.

During the break, Meng left the glass-encased court and went into the far left section of the public gallery. She emerged into the hallway with all 20 or so people who were seated there. Small talk and smiles. One of them told @bobmackin they’re Huawei workers from Shenzhen.
🚨EXCLUSIVE update: Man tells @inamitchellfilm he was tricked to be in pro-Meng Wanzhou protest outside the Law Courts in Vancouver on the first day of the #Huawei CFO's extradition hearing #cdnpoli #uspoli #vanRE thebreaker.news/news/paid-prot…
