BREAKING: WTO members met as the Dispute Settlement Body today (yes it still functions)

1. They adopted a first-stage panel ruling in Indonesia's complaint (dispute DS529) against Australian anti-dumping duties on A4 copy paper. Neither side appealed.

2. The US continued to block a call from 120 WTO members to start selecting appeals judges to fill vacancies.

Several delegations noted the statement by ministers from 45 members announcing they would use WTO arbitration while appeals are not possible.

3. China said it would reform its market price support for wheat and rice in order to comply with a panel ruling that said the support exceeded China’s entitlement (DS511). China did not appeal.

The deadline to comply is March 31

Well known: Its struggles in dispute settlement and negotiating new agreements.

Much less attention paid to: its success. This is important for understanding international trade.

First, let’s get rid of the idea that the WTO has ground to a halt because of the dispute settlement crisis.

GDP(Gross Domestic Product) = total output of UK #economy, on which vital tax-take depends. HMG needs our tax (from companies, employees, householders) to fund OUR public services. Flat GDP growth (low % uplift) means less capability to fund services on which we depend!

Hear Dr Phillips inform Jamaica that the nominal exchange rate is not an indicator of whether the economy is “weak or strong”.
Subsequent to my post on Tuesday that provided a reminder of Dr Phillip’s exchange rate pronouncements while Minister of Finance, today he acknowledged his support of a market exchange rate. That is a good start.

#OpportunityCost is the aggregate net cost of doing something, vis a vis 'not doing it' at all.

The initial project, option & prospect of #Brexit came with huge opportunity costs, which were too easily pre-discounted as #ProjectFear. 1/
The initial #Leave case, dramatised by the #BorisBus, contended that UK could save its £350m pw #EU 'gross membership contribution' and pass that 'saving' straight to the #NHS - as 'additional funding'. 2/
The #Leave case focused on saving UK's #EU gross membership cost in favour of #NHS.

It ignored regular #EU annual contributions back into a multiplicity of UK projects, which would obviously be stopped, if we ceased membership.

It is a simple, temporary basic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between U.K. and EU which allows tariffs & quotas to continue at zero whilst a full and comprehensive FTA is negotiated instead, such as CETA+++/SuperCanada
3/ the EU has offered the U.K. this CETA+++/SuperCanada on three separate occasions (7th March; 2nd August; 4th October). It can be accompanied by ‘standstill’ arrangements in areas such as rules of origin and standards so very little actually changes as a result of ‘no deal’.
