Every 4 years, people forget how vicious primaries are, claiming you can't win with rancor.

In 2016, the GOP mauled one another & Trump won.

In 2008, the Clinton/Obama war was the most hateful I've seen. Obama won.

Don't forget what Bush/Rove did to McCain in 2000; he won.
The 2008 Dem primary between Obama & Clinton was as nasty & hateful as it gets. Clinton surrogates like @rtraister called Obama supporters misogynists. Obama supporters called the Clintons racists. Obama's campaign was based on depicting Hillary as a liar:
@rtraister Here was one particularly potent Obama ad against Clinton in 2008: she's a liar, she'll say anything to win, she's an empty vessel who will change nothing, she's captive to corporate interests, etc. Huge numbers of Clinton supporters refused to vote for Obama (PUMA). He still won
@rtraister That's why when you hear people like Clinton flack/DC lobbyist @joelockhart & @soledadobrien implicitly threaten that Bernie won't win if you criticize centrist Dems, ignore them. It's just a form of blackmail to shield establishment Dems from critique while they bash the left.
@rtraister @joelockhart @soledadobrien Primaries exist for candidates to tout their strengths & **the weaknesses of their opponents**. It's a healthy, vital process. Centrist Dems have no difficulty understanding this when they bash the candidates they hate (Bernie, Tulsi, etc.). They just don't want to be critiqued.
