X : Isn't Maturity mapping the same as Wardley mapping?
Me : Why is that important? It's all about perspective. The purpose of mapping isn't to force one particular perspective on others but to encourage the discovery of other perspectives. It's the only way mapping will evolve.
X : But what about IP?
Me : What about it? There's a reason why mapping is creative commons share alike. It has nothing to do with ownership and everything to do with encouraging a field to develop. Think "small piece of a large pie rather than large piece of a small pie"
If I had taken a traditional IP path to mapping then I could pretty much guarantee that today the number of people mapping would be countable on one hand or more likely it would have died off rather than creating a vibrant community ...
... if you want someone to thank, you can thank both the open source world and World of Warcraft for teaching me how to create global communities of the interested out of nothing at all bar a singular idea. The traditional MBA path would have failed monstrously.
X : Have you ever mapped mapping?
Me : Long ago.
X : How long does it take to learn mapping?
Me : It's a journey. Relatively quick to start but a lifetime of learning will follow. I regularly drop bits into the community to push it along but it's a vast subject and we have to take everyone with us.
