On 28 February, @WHO raised the risk assessment for the #COVID19 outbreak
to “very high” globally, based on the spread of the new #coronavirus & countries’ capacity to respond.
The risk within #China remained unchanged as "very high."
The global #COVID19 risk is very high for following reasons (1):
-increase of international spread of cases
-large clusters of cases currently reported outside 🇨🇳
-limited testing capacity in some countries
-potential medical supply shortages

The global #COVID19 risk is very high for following reasons (2):
-difficulty in identifying cases due to non-specific symptoms & the potential of undetected transmission
-potential for major impact on healthcare systems in some affected & potentially affected countries.
Risk assessments are done by @WHO & the conclusions are shared with public health authorities, including through the International Health Regulations Event Information Site. The assessments are undertaken and updated regularly to inform decision-making and planning. #COVID19

Knowing & understanding an epidemic is the first step to defeating it.
We are in unchartered territory with #COVID19. We have never before seen a respiratory pathogen that is capable of community transmission, but which can also be contained with the right measures.
Containment of #COVID19 is feasible and must remain the top priority for all countries. There is no one-size fits all approach. @WHO is advising countries on actions they can take for each of the scenarios – first case, first cluster, first evidence of community transmission.
Our message to all countries is: this is not one-way street. We can push this #coronavirus back.

Your actions now will determine the course of the #COVID19 outbreak in your country.

There’s no choice but to act now.

#COVID19 is an infectious disease caused by a new #coronavirus introduced to humans for the first time. It spreads from person to person mainly through the droplets produced when an infected person speaks, coughs or sneezes.
To reduce your risk from the new #coronavirus infection:

-clean your hands regularly
-don't touch your face after touching contaminated surfaces
-clean surfaces regularly with disinfectant
-educate yourself about #COVID19

In my briefing today, I informed media that based on latest #coronavirus developments we have now increased our assessment of the risk of spread and the risk of impact of #COVID19 to very high at a global level.
What we see at the moment are linked epidemics of #COVID19 in several countries, but most cases can still be traced to known contacts or clusters of cases. We do not see evidence as yet that the virus is spreading freely in communities.
There are things every individual can do to protect themselves & others today. Your risk depends on where you live, your age & general health.
@WHO provides general guidance, but you should also follow your national guidance & consult local #healthworkers
