*SHORT THREAD*

More from Dr. Aylward, the @WHO lead on their China mission.

1/ @NPR published this piece today.

Dr. Aylward believes that discrete #COVID19 outbreaks around the world are still containable-- w/ the right strategies.

2/ Re China- "They actually changed the course of a respiratory-borne outbreak without a vaccine, which was extraordinary."

I noticed today was the first day since the start that the @WHO situation report showed double digits for new cases out of China.

3/
Aylward says the lessons to take from China are not the draconian measures to restrict public life.

He points out that only a few cities had strict lockdowns.

The vast majority did not.

Instead, they "really went back to fundamentals of public health."
4/
-ramping up testing capacity to identify cases

-isolation measures for those who are sick

-contact tracing for all close contacts

-prohibiting mass gatherings where clusters were occurring

-major restrictions on movement when there is significant community level spread
5/ In my last thread earlier today, some responses were of panic.

We need to turn that energy into:

-mobilizing at community/city/state levels

-practicing safe practices at individual level

Every single one of us is needed. This quote from the NYTimes article stuck w/ me:
