Fascist leaders are not equipped to deal with a real crisis.
They only now how to deal with a manufactured crises.
In a totalitarian society, the leadership would never be held accountable or blamed . . .

The Republicans have been systematically dismantling the federal government (the "deep state") and regulatory agencies.
They don't like agencies and regulations because they don't want the government telling them what to do.

The "again" in MAGA signifies reactionary politics.

There are a few things they forget, however.
6/
The average age span was much shorter.
Ooops! Forgot about that.
Moreover, only a functioning government is equipped to handle a pandemic.
Double oops.
7/
Totally the wrong kind of crisis.
Trump much prefers a "crisis" of defenseless, homeless migrants "invading."
He can't control COVID-19 with a mean tweet, so it's beyond his ability.
8/
When Trump initially downplayed the danger, he was most likely thinking of the stock market and economy.
His vast "instincts" about medicine told him that it was nothing more serious than the flu, so he took a chance. If indeed it didn't spread . . .

Meanwhile, we know that Republican Senators downplayed the risk to the public while they unloaded stock.
In other words, their first thought was to profit from the pandemic. thedailybeast.com/sen-kelly-loef…

But this is different from deliberately setting out to kill people in this manner.
12/
That's what Timothy Snyder calls "sadopopulism."⤵️
A pandemic is different because it also kills rich people.

Also: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. (Hanlon, I think)
As far as offering help and being proactive: It's entirely possible that Trump had no idea how to do it, and he doesn't have people around him who do.
14/
I wouldn't be surprised if he took Hannity's word for how to respond.
15/
Alexander Hamilton. . .
16/
Thomas Jefferson wanted a weak central government with each state independent of the others. (Jefferson at one point suggested a central committee instead of a federal government).
17/
Red states wanted a weak federal government.
Plus (bonus!!) they got a president who doesn't think it's his job to help the states.
18/
Maybe (just hear me out) just maybe the ideas that informed and underlaid the Confederacy—like a weak central government and powerful states—were stupid ideas.
Maybe Hamilton was right.
