Is it possible Americans could be in doubt of this?
I understand why a literal-minded copy editor chose the word "may." None of us have the first clue what the future holds. We might as well throw out the whole future tense, at this point.
But the headline does readers a disservice. It suggests that we "may" have suffered a little damage. A minor setback. Nothing that can't be fixed.
This is the only optimistic scenario I can envision: Tomorrow, American scientists discover a vaccine and save the world. That could turn things around.

But the days in which we were "leaders" is otherwise over. The world is looking at us with horror.
We're a tragedy, not a leader.

It's odd, that--variations in mathematical-mindedness among the human population. I'm mathematically-minded enough that I could do the math and make the correct estimate of how many would die.
I'm mathematically-minded enough that I severely modified my own behavior and have been begging the world, every waking minute of my day, all day long, every day, to do the same, through every medium of communication at my disposal.
I *really believed* this would happen. My behavior reflected this belief. Many philosophers and theologians believe your acts are the true measure of your faith. Clearly, my acts reflected my faith in the data we've got so far and the math.

For those of you arguing that we should balance projected coronavirus deaths against projected deaths consequent to an economic collapse, I actually agree. We should. But the latter are extremely hard to predict, and may be counterintuitive. Consider this:
We've been expecting emergency rooms in Paris to overflow, as they have elsewhere. But yesterday, I was stunned to see that the *total* number of admissions has in fact gone down so far: leparisien.fr/societe/corona…
Coronavirus admissions have soared. But all other admissions? Down. Why? I don't know. But some hypotheses:

First, everyone has been told, under no uncertain terms, not to go to the ER with frivolous complaints.

'Asterix and Obelix' artist dies f24.my/6JUa. He lived to 92 and died in his sleep of a heart attack. My first reaction was not to feel sad for him or his family, but, "Lucky! 92. Heart attack in his sleep." Now, this is true in normal times, too: That's a lucky end.
But that response is perverse. My grandfather died suddenly at the age of 92. We were devastated. We still are. I miss him every single day. He died in 2001 and it *still* seems strange to be on this planet without him. Here he was at 89: milkenarchive.org/videos/categor…

When he died, I didn't really think, "Well, how lucky! He lived a long, fully-realized life, and he was old, anyway."

1st, central banks should develop a facility to assure that credit is not cut off to key sectors of the economy, come what may. Steadily available credit is much more important than lower-priced credit.
2nd, as huge excess capacity at major global ports suggests, this is a moment for less-not more-interference w trade flows. Though it may go against @POTUS instincts, USA should lead global effort to reduce tariffs as a source of stimulus for duration of the health emergency.
