Conventional wisdom suggests that Republicans want Trump to reopen the economy ASAP

That's wrong

This Economist/YouGov poll from March 22-24 shows that Republicans approve of President Trump's response - and of aggressive social distancing

Let's start with how the Public views President Trump's response

42% think his policy is appropriate
39% think he's not taking the risks seriously enough

Only 5%!!!! think he's overreacting
Among Republicans - 80% think his response is appropriate, only 5% think he's overreacting
67% of the public - and 63% of Republicans - think shelter-in-place orders are not an overreaction

Only 27% of Republicans and 21% of the public think they are
It's 74/19 in favor of closing restaurants and bars, 69/26 among Republicans

Not to be harsh, but this is quite literally fake news, @JordanSchachtel.

As @RaheemKassam and others have explained, Ferguson is not "running" from his original projection. His prediction is *in his original paper*
As @RaheemKassam points out - the 20,000 figure was an estimate of what would happen if Britain put in place full social distancing measures (which they now have)

This is from Ferguson's initial paper, page 13.

21,000 is the projected death figure if the UK implements the measures which it now has.

Indeed. When you're model goes from predicting THE WORLD WILL END to predicting "no biggie, equivalent to a minor flu season" within a week, it means the model is garbage and we stop paying attention to your predictions
That said people are taking the wrong lesson

I'm seeing many people go "See! Now the model predicts a small # of deaths! We clearly overreacted!"

Wrong

The lesson is "these models are garbage and we can't rely on them in EITHER direction."
Then we're back to the original position

Which is: enormous uncertainty about transmissibility, lethality, etc

Some guess that huge %s of the population have already been infected and the virus is less lethal than people think

Great! Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

President Trump cannot impose quarantines or lift them

What he can do is mobilize the vast resources of the federal government to:

1) defeat the virus with masks, ventilators, testing, and beds

2) compensate the workers and businesses suffering from social distancing
Trump's numbers went up MASSIVELY in the past week because he did exactly this

He's embraced the mantle of "wartime President" and things are ramping up aggressively

And he's pushed for relief for businesses

This is strong leadership, and he should keep it up
Trump can't reopen the economy on his own

He can't force governors to lift shelter-in-place orders

Nor can he forced scared consumers and workers to go out in the middle of a pandemic

But if he leads the charge and we beat this thing, the economy comes back and he wins in 2020
