It’s an interesting approach at @MITSloanFellows - placed into teams rather than allowed to select own team. The teams are formed so there is likely to be misalignment and conflict. And then we have to work together for grades. We cannot do usual bonding activities via Zoom
Teams are being coached & cautioned that it is easy to create “in” and “out” groups to exclude, marginalize, label some in group. Instead, keep open communication and pause prior to forming any conclusion.

“Identify where on ladder you are.

Are you:
-Selecting your data or reality?
-Interpreting what it means?
-Making or testing assumptions?
-Forming or testing conclusions?
-Deciding what to do and why?”

Vet, verify, listen, consider

(This seems especially relevant for biases)
These are some great representations of the ladder of inference that can split teams or cause interpersonal dysfunction

We have several countries and cultures represented and gender mix. We’ve been discussing each other’s GlobeSmart results and how we are as a team. Some stock images. I think what will be most different is how we process data and information and speed of that.

@MITSloan
There is a high risk of #implicitbias in all these interactions. In fact it already came up as we have dissemination off types of media from one country to another but characters portrayed may be stereotypes or extremes.

All this is validating one of the reasons I came to @MITSloanFellows and @MITSloan - I want to address biases like racism and sexism being built into #AI. We need more #womenintech #WomenInSTEM #minoritiesintech and those with #publichealth background.

There are several articles identifying this built in #bias in #AI #MachineLearning that is replicating #implicitbias, explicit bias, #StructuralRacism

With #coronavirus #pandemic critical time

The only #TikTok I made was to better understand facial recognition used for the cat face

Fascinating to see how a simple app can apply make up, change your hair, change your face, track eyebrows.

(Yes, China now has my face. But I’m Muslim. Never have had any data privacy.)
Video on the segregation (firewall) of Western #TikTok & Chinese version. A total disconnect as the #coronavirus #pandemic was on the rise - information disconnects may be more concerning than disinformation. Walls block needed info transfer #technology

Although, like Facebook, TikTok has been accused of some pretty egregious things. Zoom also has had security issues but more from being Zoom bombed than being complicit. Question is, who is *not* misusing your data?

Ethical issues with 23andMe - is it okay to profit off of selling genetic data?

“share consumers' anonymized genetic data with pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline as part of a $300-million deal.”

#AI #technology use by police @techreview

“data-mining firm Palantir to deploy a predictive policing system... used historical data, including arrest records and electronic police reports, to forecast crime and help shape public safety strategies”

technologyreview.com/2019/02/13/137…
There are many many articles on this and it’s not clear to me that

in talk about need to reform police

or @APHA @ @AmerMedicalAssn on racism

is this aspect of policing being talked about at all?

As a Muslim American in #NYC this literally hits home

“NYPD...intelligence on cab drivers and food cart vendors, jobs often done by Muslims..sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip..recorded students’ names & how many times they prayed”

In general there has been an erosion of civil liberties, particularly specific to minorities. Yet this has not alarmed the mainstream. There is shock at current actions seen on TV. But where did it start? When we do not pay attention, it spreads

Given everything that’s going on in the US now and has been developing over the last decade, I particularly enjoy having Brazilian classmates at @MITSloan who are striving to be ethical leaders amid all this corruption:

I am not suggesting @MIT @MITSloan or @MITSloanFellows are perfect

I *love* that the very first week we are not only talking about #implicitbias but actually forced into teams all summer, with grades dependent on each other, with tools & coaching to surface then address biases
