Sunday's #Coronavirus megathread will, as always, be updated throughout the day with news, data and analysis.
Few paid attention while we warned of rising #Covid19 cases in the Balkans then central Europe. Now everyone's concerned as big nations suffer.
Come inside folks!
And I'll start with Europe's biggest nation (in population), #Germany
A further 27% rise in #Covid19 cases confirmed overnight with 10,572 new infections for Saturday vs 8,311 the week before.
#Brazil's been the focus of much attention of late as deaths soar.
The number of people who were reported to have died of #Covid19 yesterday actually dipped, but only because it's the weekend. In fact 1,940 deaths is 30% higher than last Saturday's 1,498
New cases: 70,934 (+5%)
This time yesterday there were worrying data from #USA
Today the news is much better.
#Covid19 cases are back down by around 10%, but as usual on weekends, nine states have not updated their totals.
On Saturday the U.S. passed 30 million confirmed cases
A rise of 29% in new cases for #Belgium today as #Covid19's variants tighten their grip.
3,598 more infections, up 800 from a week ago.
The 7-day rate now is 240 AD/M
#Ireland's National Immunisation Advisory Committee has recommended immediately stopping use of the AstraZeneca #Covid19 vaccine
#Ukraine's infection rate jumps from 188 to 194 AD/M today, but watch it balloon upwards in the next few days to well over 250, nearer 300 by next weekend.
9,012 new #Covid19 cases today, a 25% rise from last Sunday.
#Czechia's data are better today
Cases of #Covid19 are well down, and deaths too.
6,914 new infections, down from 9,066, and 143 more deaths.
@tvuck pointed out to me that mass testing is taking place in workplaces likely leading to higher cases weekdays.
#Hungary reports its worst ever Sunday figures as #Covid19 cases leap another 43%
8,863 new cases and 162 new deaths.
The infection rate's gone from 707 to 747 in a single day.
The death rate's rising and every chance the record daily death toll of 193 could be broken this week
Major relief for #Estonia with a big fall in new cases of #Covid19
935 is still extremely high for the small Baltic nation, but well down on last Sunday's 1,321.
However testing was down and the positive test rate remains 8.2%
#Poland's cases of #Covid19 are up 27% again today.
21,049 is today's figure, compared with 17,259 last Sunday.
The all time daily record in Poland is 27,875 and I project they'll get close to that in 4 days time and the record is on course to be broken on, or about, 25 March.
After a week of stability, a big leap in new #Covid19 infections in #Finland today.
863 new cases represents a 69% rise on last Sunday.
No indication yet if there are backlogged cases in that surprisingly large total. The effects of lockdown should see cases fall now.
#Norway has seen its highest daily intake of #Covid19 patients into hospital for 11 months.
200 more people have been admitted throughout the country, 23 more than the previous day.
The Nordic nation looks certain to break its national record for new cases soon.
8,941 new cases of #Covid19 today which is 35% up on last Sunday. There's also likely to be a few more added to the total in the morning as some areas have not yet updated their figures.
1/9 Which countries are the worst liars when it comes to #Covid19 deaths (and which are the most honest)?
There's no definitive way of stating, but analysis of excess deaths is a guide to the real extent of #Coronavirus
I've worked out official deaths as a % of excess deaths..
2/9 This is the best way to expose clear cheating.
But it's not perfect
Many nations suspected of underplaying #Covid19 deaths don't declare mortality data, notably India, Indonesia and Turkey, though for the latter two stats are available for the biggest cities Jakarta/Istanbul
3/9 Data are the latest available for each country but e.g. while Peru, Spain, UK are right up to date, others are >6 months old.
Some nations have negative excess deaths, e.g. Taiwan, New Zealand, Thailand, Australia, Japan, Iceland, Norway.
Having lockdowns, mask wearing etc
If Friday turned out to be fearful, we can only hope it's not a shocking Saturday.
More and more countries and regions heading back into lockdown as #Covid19 spreads quicker then the vaccines.
And already today new record - read on..
The first record to report is from crisis-torn #Brazil
For the 3rd successive day over 2,000 deaths.
But it's new #Covid19 cases rewriting the record books today with 84,047 positive tests, that's 12% more than the week before
2,152 more deaths takes total fatalities over 275k
Across #Belarus another Sunday protest march, and more inhumane actions from the regime. Here a guy, seemingly unconscious is hauled away, his head almost on the snowy ground, to be dumped next to an unmarked police van
Sunday's #Coronavrus thread starts with developments in the #USA
Fewer testing centres open, fewer labs analysing results and fewer people wanting to be tested over the long holiday weekend, so as expected the drop in #Covid19 infections continues.
143,373 new cases, down 32k
There were signs the #Covid19 case load in #USA was about to naturally lower before Thanksgiving, so whether infections bounce back to previous levels remains to be seen.
Now a new worry as another mink outbreak is discovered in #Oregon
