I received a gift from #India, a little stone, symbol of teaching. A very precious symbol to me. Now thinking about the new Team #Europe diplomacy on raw material. #Thread
#EU is trying is enhance its diplomacy by diversifying imports and increasing its own capacities through a better coordinated approach. We have now new legislation. The act foresees the creation of a board that would provide a #European perspective on #raw materials. 1/1
You might wonder: "Why start mines in #Europe, when the whole supply chain process works so well and cost-efficiently in #China?" 1/2
We are in a global supply chain. It does not matter if a computer is produced in #Europe or #China. When you think realistic, it is not about flag, it is about values. 1/3
The entire value chain for car batteries in connection with graphite is in #China. Source: #Euractiv. Do we have investments or better to go to China? The waste eligible for recycling is currently being shipped to other countries, most notably #China. 1/4
#China controls up to 80% of the refining chains for strategic metals, & over 90% in some raw materials key to #Europe’s production process. The new EU legislation on critical raw materials act is about reducing our dependency of China. 1/5
The new legislation stipulates that at least 10% of the #EU’s annual consumption of crucial raw materials are to come from #European soil, with a 40% target for refining raw materials & a 15% target for recycling. 1/6
Permission time for critical #rawmaterials is to be reduced to 2 years, down from 10 years currently. The member states will need to improve its #environmental impact assessment. There will be a lot of public pressure to respect the environment. 1/7
It doesn't take a genius to understand how our 🌐 is going. Covid was a wake-up call, helping us to understand how the supply chain shortages works. We strategically shift our production capacities towards #Europe. 1/8
And we might be tempted to believe that after all this legislation is not so important...but it really matters. Within the next y, we would have to decide if we are nurturing our relations with #democracies or with #autocracies. It will have impact on our international 🌐order.🔚
OK, I'm ready for this! In 🇯🇵 Prime Minister’s Office with Mr. Noriyuki Shikata, Cabinet Secretary for Public Affairs. Standing as a proud #European & got informed on #G7 & Japan Priorities. I am optimistic about #Japan’s new foreign policy for the following reasons. #Thread
#Japanese Realism Diplomacy means
- support for #Ukraine,
- free and open Indo-Pacific,
- enhancing relationship with like-minded countries,
- #UnitedNations Reform including the Security Council. 1/1
#Japanese Realism Diplomacy is about maintaining and strengthening the rules-based free & open international order, about the peaceful resolution of disputes, the non-use of force, & respect for sovereignty, freedom of navigation, free trade, and respect for human rights. 1/2
Focus on the #Japanese Realism Diplomacy for a new Era. We need some inspiration in #EU since Putin is striking strategic relationship with #China, #SouthAfrica & #Brazil. No time to waste on Franco-Italian tensions triggered by a diplomatic dinner. #Hiroshima#Thread
#Chinese FM Wang Yi will visit #Russia as part of a diplomatic tour in Europe. His 9-day trip will also include stops in #France, #Italy, #Hungary and #Germany, where he will speak at the #Munich Security Conference. #CNN 1/1
#EU ambassadors were briefed in small groups over the weekend by Ursula von der Leyen’s chief of staff Björn Seibert about the plans for the 10th sanctions package against #Russia. #Politico 1/2
Extradition, fighting terrorism and freezing assets was part of the memorandum of understanding that #Turkey signed with #Sweden and #Finland in return for Ankara’s approval to their #Nato accession. 1/1
In #Sweden extradition is not a political decision but based on the judicial system. Terrorism is much broader in Turkey than it's in Sweden. The Swedish court came to the conclusion that some of Turkey’s accusations against the journalist are not crimes in Sweden. 1/2
Just reading that @Europarl_EN cancels upcoming diplomatic missions to Morocco & Qatar amid ongoing probes of corruption allegations. 30 MEPs call on to ban Moroccan diplomats from entering #EP pending an outcome in the corruption investigation. Not my approach. #Mythread
The European Parliament needs first to apply the current rules properly. Let’s recall that a decade or so ago, the European Parliament was rocked by a cash-for-influence scandal leading to the resignation of some MEPs. 1/1
As the result, #EP introduced in 2012 a new Code of Conduct aimed at preventing corruption. Everything is in this Code: principles: disinterest, integrity, openness, diligence, honesty, accountability, respect for EP reputation. #Brussels 1/2
#Sweden told #Turkey that it cannot fulfil its extradition requests as a quid pro quo for Turkish agreement to Swedish #Nato membership, but arms exports might create some political room for manoeuvre. #thread
#UlfKristersson, Sweden’s prime minister, said that the country will do what it needs to in order to fulfil the tripartite agreement with #Turkey signed last summer. #Sweden is neither able nor willing to fulfil conditions that go beyond the scope of the deal. 1/2
#Turkey has requested the extradition of people living in Sweden. The decision is a matter for the Swedish courts. Other concessions from Ankara are arms deliveries. There is no formal ban on arms exports to Turkey, but in practice there is. 1/3
"Do we want China to fail" Nobody wants to see China fail. The #Ukrainian war & #Covid pandemic have demonstrated the existing limitations & risk of our dependency of #China, it has challenged our abilities to act in line with its interests in an interconnected 🌐. That’s all 1/2
Currently, #China controls a vast majority of those resources, providing Beijing with a powerful tool - export restrictions in a challenging geopolitical context. China will never be poor 1/3.
