#EUCO today. Sufficient Progress decision. How did we get here and where do we go? Thread.
1. UK miscalculated EU's unity, inflexibility, popularity among member states and overestimated UK's hand.
2. Unity: all agreed that importance of internal market to EU far outweighs importance of good deal with britain.
3. Inflexibility: EU uninterested in creative solutions. They see this as Britain's problem and onus on London to minimise their costs.
4. Popularity: while non-British euroscepticism exists it's much weaker than in the UK. EU also fulfils emotional as well as transactional needs in all other member states.
10. Because Brexit is seen as a British act for which the UK must compensate its former EU partners.
11c. Canada for all UK is incompatible with last Friday's agreement.
