These impromptu Trump conversations do produce newsworthy bits, and it does give you a greater sense of who he is. But something about this doesn’t sit right with me. He just wants to spout off without challenge. He has Fox News for that, not the @nytimes. nyti.ms/2E8f0Fn
There is some news in what Trump told @nytmike, surely. But was that really an interview? I don't know. I've been there as a journalist, thinking that you're interviewing someone and realizing that you're just regularly interrupting a rant. It sucks. You do the best you can.
That said, why keep going back to the same interview subject with the same approach? How many of these conversations have we seen printed? Forget about challenging him—at some point, doesn't this just get repetitive? The only real news emerges from whatever fresh crazy he offers.
Trump is dictating the means of engagement with the media to a point where the interview loses meaning. Perhaps that's the goal. Just once, I want to see him interviewed like he's expected to know everything a @POTUS should know, and reporters don't dance around his insecurities.
