All right, y'all: let's go.

I am a (female) writer working in the world of today, where the sky is falling every thirty seconds and half of us are waiting for the biosphere to be actually on fire with literal flames.

This has put...let's call it "something of a damper" on promoting my work for the last year, because the combination of "I feel like I'm fiddling while Rome burns" and "randoms crawl out of the non-Euclidean corners to yell at me for doing exactly that" feeds my anxiety.

The "female" in my first tweet is important as well. Women are much more likely to be told "don't brag" and "you're getting arrogant, you keep talking about yourself" and "smile and be pretty and the work will find its audience."

(Note: Experience MORE LIKELY for women, not a) universal for women or b) completely foreign to men. It is a gendered experience, it is not a gender-exclusive experience. I can only speak from where I stand.)

I am trying to get over this! It is not an easy try. Important tries very rarely are. But on that note, and with that said...

BENEATH THE SUGAR SKY is the third book in the Wayward Children series, and the direct sequel to the events of EVERY HEART A DOORWAY.

It is about home and harbor and identity and loss; it's about the way our parents shape us, and the way we shape each other.

It's also about an ocean completely filled with strawberry soda, because that would be amazing, and you would find me sunbathing on a pool floaty with a six-foot straw.

It's about assumptions. The way we make them, the way we see each other, the way we see ourselves. It's about second chances, and compromises, and old friends, and lost friends, and turtles.

BENEATH THE SUGAR SKY can be read independently of the other books in the series, but I don't necessarily recommend it: it will have more resonance if you read EVERY HEART A DOORWAY first.
