The cost of our scientific computing equipment has doubled because they are using GPUs to mine bitcoins.
BTW, by "bitcoin" I mean cryptocurrency generically. As @ihrachyshka points out, it's probably Ethereum.
If you are curious about the science, we're trying to detect signs of the first stars and galaxies that formed in the Universe: reionization.org. The GPUs cross-correlate data from hundreds of antennas to make them behave together as one large radio telescope.
