/ The government and senior Tories speak of the "Will of the People", not the will of the majority (though even that would be pushing the truth). And who then are political opponents?
/ The Daily Mail makes it clear who the opponents of the "Will of the People" are. They are the "enemies of the people". And with that the floodgates are opened to a tide of hate directed against opponents of #Brexit, saboteurs, plotters, mutineers etc.
/ And that hate is presented as legitimate because we Remainers are opposing the "democratic will of the people". So our democratic right to oppose is being portrayed as an anti-democratic attempt to overthrow the will of the people.
/ The right to oppose and seek to lawfully overturn any government policy is absolutely central to democracy, but the "will of the people" provides a democratic sounding excuse for press and politicians to claim that it is undemocratic for us to exercise that right.
/ The "will of the people" is therefore being used just as the Nazis used it, as an ideological tool to delegitimise political opposition and to justify the concentration of unchecked power in the hands of the government.
/ Fortunately our democracy is far more robust than that of early 1930s Germany, but the rage that came from the Tories about the Article 50 court case shows their desire to use the referendum to override normal legal and Parliamentary checks and balances.
/ To my mind the "Will of the People" is a notion that is absolutely toxic to democracy, and its introduction into our political culture as a tool for delegitimising opposition, may well end up as one of the most damaging legacies of #Brexit.
