@nanransohoff shares the scoop

climatetechvc.substack.com/p/-a-new-front…
Until this week, the world has collectively bought just 10,000 tonnes of permanent carbon removals - ever.

@nanransohoff and the Frontier crew from intend to spur the market to 6,000,000,000 tonnes by 2050, and there’s no time to lose.

Some great takeaways 👇 @climatetech_vc
"Frontier borrowed a concept from the energy sector - ✨offtake✨ agreements. Suppliers benefit because they can take the guarantee to the bank for project financing. Buyers benefit because they only pay once the carbon has actually been removed."

First a reality check: emissions are outrageously high, STILL haven’t peaked, & continue to reveal massive gaps in ambition, development, and progress (e.g. North America per capita emissions 50% higher than the next highest region, 5x South Asia).

Is there any good news?

2/x Image
Yes, of a sort!

1. Congrats to the 18 countries that actually reduced their emissions!
2. Prosperous, low(er)-carbon economies are becoming more plausible (e.g. Europe's per capita emissions are still high, but emissions per unit GDP are low)
3. Renewables got MUCH cheaper

If you ever wanted to acquire #carbonoffsets, you've surely faced the question of categorization. Here is an easy taxonomy 👇 🧵
1/ Two weeks ago I highlighted the difference between carbon emission reduction and removal projects.

The idea of #CarbonReduction is to pay others to reduce emissions in your place. But your output remains in the system. One plus zero.
2/ #CarbonRemoval on the other hand scrubs carbon directly from the atmosphere. Plus one, minus one.

But technically, the #carbonmarket makes no difference. A ton is a ton.

When I shifted my career to #workonclimate, climate podcasts helped get me informed and up to speed.

Here are 10 excellent, recent climate episodes you should listen to now.👇🏽🧵
1/ The aviation sector is one of the hardest to decarbonize.

@CatalystPod with @shaylekann gets into the weeds with @rutherdan on the complexities and options for decarbonizing aviation. From SAFs to electric propulsion, this one is a must listen!

2/ I’m hearing more about the risks of natural gas in the home. One more reason to consider switching.

The crew at @EnergyvsClimate covers the topic for us on one of their recent episodes with @brucenilles.

2 years ago, working in global health, I was struggling to find a way to transition my career to climate change.

Since then, I've worked on 10+ climate projects with NGOs and startups. For people looking to break into #climate - here are some strategies that helped me. 👇👇
1/ Figure out your "why".

Yes, climate change is a big, hairy problem. But it's important to understand what about it is personal / significant to you. For 10 years I lived + worked where people will experience CC's worst effects, and I want to work on addressing that injustice.
2/ Listen and learn.

Don't talk. Listen to climate scientists, activists, and entrepreneurs. Honor their contribution by learning from their experiences + reading their work.

#carboncapture is a unique set of tech because it has a dual role in addressing #climatechange. It can help to reduce emissions from point sources, AND it can remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Let that sink in.
There are not many solutions out there that do both.

We have a new paper out on how to use rocks to pull #CO2 out of the air and stabilize it as...rocks.

TL;DR: Surface rocks in Japan could remove 7.6 Gt-CO2/y at 1.5 GJ/t-CO2.

It's open access, so send it to your mother. I know I did.

A thread.

iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… Image

We started with a map of all the surface rocks in Japan (~158,000 entries) including the depth of the formations. We narrowed it down to rocks with high Mg or Ca content. We then removed all populated areas, protected ecosystems, etc. to make a map of potential sites. Image
2/n
...this leads to a potential #CDR of 15,591 Gt-CO2...so more than we need for #2DS.
But, most of that rock is volcanic (amorphous).
Previously we found that amorphous compounds react >1,000X slower than equivalent crystalline compounds.

What is this about, and why do I think it important?

A thread 1/15
Most climate scientists are so concerned about the risks of climate change that they typically support 'all of the above' ... in other words, behaviour change, energy efficiency, decarbonization, low-carbon technology and carbon removal (not unreasonable on the face of it) 2/15
Our previous work in @NatureClimate rdcu.be/b3FEB shows that such responses are not simply additive, and while some may interact positively, galvanising more action, others - especially promises of future technological solutions - tend to undermine emissions cuts 3/15
