Any military operation that has been expected for months usually fails because the opponent has had plenty of time to plan a defence. Most successful operations are surprise operations, but not all surprise attacks work against a prepared opponent.

Expected attacks can work if there's overwhelming force. An example is #DesertStorm.

Example of successful surprise operations: #PearlHarbor, The #Incheon Landings in the #KoreanWar, #OperationUranus at #Stalingrad in October 1942 that encircled the #German #SixthArmy.

An example of a failed attack because there was no surprise in it was #OperationCitadel at the #BattleofKursk in June 1943. The expected line of attack was obvious to everyone because of the disposition of troops.

Over the course of just 100 hours, U.S. and allied ground forces in Iraq and Kuwait decisively defeated the battle-hardened and dangerous Iraqi military, and President George H.W. Bush declared a victorious ceasefire on 28 FEB.
During air and ground ops, the U.S.-led coalition destroyed over 3,000 tanks, 1,400 armored personnel carriers, and 2,200 artillery pieces along with countless other vehicles. This was achieved at a cost to the U.S. of 98 soldiers killed and 105 non-hostile deaths.
With Kuwait liberated, U.S. forces immediately turned to humanitarian missions. They sorted out refugees, assisted the Kuwaitis in reoccupying their city, and helped them begin the long process of rebuilding.

One of the most iconic episodes of DESERT STORM is the destruction unleashed by against enemy forces along the so-called “Highway of Death.”

The most famous portion of the Highway of Death is Highway 80, the main artery connecting Iraq and Kuwait; an important spur of the road inside Iraq was Highway 8, which was used by Iraqi military elements as they fled in the face of the U.S. advance and attempted to regroup.
In the Army’s “turkey shoot,” the 24th ID engaged the enemy on Highway 8 during the afternoon/evening of the 27th, employing artillery, armor, and AH-64 Apache helicopters to decimate Iraqi forces, destroying 185 armored vehicles and 400 trucks.

The final epic clash of armor during DESERT STORM occurred on the afternoon of 27 FEB, when the 1st AD (“Old Ironsides”) and the 3rd ID (“Rock of the Marne”) engaged the enemy on a rise dubbed “Medina Ridge”.
After losing a huge portion of their armor in the Battle of 73 Easting and the Battle of Norfolk, enemy forces entrenched themselves at Medina Ridge for a last stand against the overwhelming might of the American VII Corps.

The Iraqi positions on the reverse slope of Medina Ridge allowed the bulk of the enemy to avoid the U.S. M1's devastating direct fire; when the battle was joined, the Iraqis stood and fought rather than quickly disintegrating as it had elsewhere.

DESERT STORM’s second major armor engagement and one of the largest tank battles in American history closely followed the Battle of 73 Easting in the early morning hours of 27 FEB.

Hours after the U.S.-led coalition smashed the enemy at 73 Easting, the 3rd BDE, 2nd AD (“Hell on Wheels”) and the 1st ID (“The Big Red One”), along with elements of other assorted British and American units, engaged the enemy just a few miles from 73 Easting.
The battle took its name from Objective Norfolk, a road junction and enemy supply depot near the point of engagement. The leading edge of VII Corps – Task Force 1-41 Infantry (Task Force Iron) – met the enemy at 0030 on the morning of the 27th amid darkness and driving rain.

Born in 1970 SFC Cashe was infantryman who served during 1991’s Operation DESERT STORM and 2003’s Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, earning a posthumous Medal of Honor for his actions in that conflict.
During his third combat tour, SFC Cashe was serving with the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd ID. On the evening of 17 OCT 2005, he was on a patrol when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) struck an IED, crippling the BFV and causing it to burst into flames.
Drenched in fuel, Cashe leapt from the gunner position and ran to BFV’s rear to help soldiers escape. As Cashe braved the flames his fuel-soaked uniform ignited; he persevered despite severe burns, pulling seven soldiers and a translator from the burning BFV.

26 FEBRUARY 1991 - BATTLE OF 73 EASTING - #DesertStorm

In what some have called it the “Last great tank battle of the 20th century” the new U.S. M1A1 Abrams main battle tank received its baptism by fire at the Battle of 73 Easting.

#Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC
Commanded by then-CPT H.R. McMaster, Eagle Troop was the lead element of the U.S. VII Corps' advance into Iraq. Eagle Troop ran into the Iraqi Republican Guard’s Tawakalna Division at 73 Easting (a north-south coordinate line) on the afternoon of 26 FEB.
#GulfWar #M1Abrams
Armed with just nine Abrams tanks and about a dozen Bradley Fighting Vehicles (BFV) against an entire enemy division, the impetuous Eagle Troop advanced while delivering a devastating barrage. In 23 minutes, McMaster’s force had obliterated over half of an Iraqi battalion.

On the night of Feb 5, 1991, Col. Tom Lennon, commander of #USAF's 48th FW, led a pair of F-111s on an experimental mission against dug-in units of the #Iraqi Republican Guard in the deserts north of Kuwait. 2/8 #avgeeks #aviation #DesertStorm #History
For the experiment, each F-111 was armed with a Pave Track pod and four GBU-12 500 lb LGBs. The crews were to see if LGBs could be guided accurately enough to hit targets as small as an AFV. 3/8 #avgeeks #aviation #USAF #DesertStorm #History

The #PersianGulfWar (1990–91), was an international conflict that was triggered by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990.

Saddam Hussein, ordered the invasion and occupation of Kuwait with the apparent aim of acquiring that nation’s large oil reserves.

By January 1991, the allied coalition against Iraq had reached a strength of 700,000 troops, including 540,000 U.S. personnel and smaller numbers of British, French, Egyptians, Saudis, Syrians, and several other national contingents.
